GC smart commute upgrades help drivers plan ahead
By Staff Reports

Lawrenceville, Ga., (March 27, 2014) – The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation on Monday announced recent upgrades to the GC Smart Commute program. The upgrades include the addition of traffic cameras and a new look to the website.

Residents now have the ability to select individual camera views from a map display and view up-to-date snapshots of current traffic conditions throughout different areas of the county.

Major arterial and intersection coverage is provided by 188 closed-circuit cameras along 186 miles of fiber optic communication cable. Another 88 Georgia DOT cameras on major routes leading into Gwinnett are linked to the system to provide additional coverage. The information is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on http://www.gcsmartcommute.com. Live video feeds are still available on TVGwinnett weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Website snapshots are updated every two minutes. Additional cameras and the webpage upgrade make it easier for residents to plan their commute before leaving home or the office. In response to frequent requests, online camera views now have next and previous buttons so that motorists can view conditions on specific routes. All cameras and equipment are installed and maintained by the Gwinnett Department of Transportation. There are currently 16 additional camera locations under construction. Over the next two years, plans call for the installation of 34 more cameras.

“We’re glad to offer more information for residents through GC Smart Commute,” said Department of Transportation Director Kim Conroy. “Thanks to these enhancements, Gwinnett motorists can use GC Smart Commute to customize what they see based on their intended travel routes and plan accordingly.”
