The Memorial Service for Lawrenceville native James Harris was on Wednesday June 16. James was an alumni of the School on the Hill and he was nationally known for his expertise in propagating and developing new varieties of azaleas; one of his creations is “Pride of Lawrenceville” a beautiful white plant that he developed during the 1990’s.
The Snellville Designing Grandmothers Chapter #1006 supports CURE Childhood Cancer Research. The club meets at 10:30 A M on the second Monday of each month at the Snellville Senior Center.
The Northeast Georgia Civil War Round Table meets on second Sundays at 3 p.m. The meetings are held at the Gwinnett History Museum on South Perry Street in Lawrenceville. All interested in the history of the War Between the States are invited to attend.
The Memorial Service for Lillian Cochran Lynch was held on Friday June 4, 2010 at the First African Baptist Church in Monroe, Georgia. Lillian Cochran Lynch was employed by the Walton County Public School System in 1960 and she retired in 1992 after completing 32 years of service as an educator. She volunteered with the Monroe Art Guild, Monroe Music Guild, Library Board, GREA Archives and History Committee, McDaniel Tichenor House Governing Board and many other endeavors which added to the quality of life for Georgia citizens. Lillian was married to William Howard Lynch who predeceased her.

A group of friends gathered at Reba Bridges ’ Lawrenceville home to greet her as she arrived there after spending several weeks in the hospital. Some who celebrated Reba’s homecoming were Sula Clack, Grace and Robert Cain, Geraldine Keller, Ruth and Buddy Greene, Elsie Roberts, Eddie and Linda Oakes, Betty Kerlin, Jean Holley, Helen Ball Daniel, Imogene Allen, Junior and Sharon Flanigan, Christine and Harlan Franklin, Juanita and Warren Barrett, Mary Sue and Mack, Lynn Mills, Ann Tribble, Jean Roebuck, Beulah and Bobby Fowler, Annette Freizen and Donna, and lots of other friends were there to welcome Reba home.
Derry Anderson, son of Ann Anderson and the late Jack R. Anderson of Loganville, graduated from the Dallas Texas Police Academy in May 2010. He and his wife Julia have three children Luke, Lauren and Julia Claire. Derry’s sister is Gwinnett County teacher, Sheri Anderson Black.

Ezzard Charles II Tours Lawrenceville - Birthplace of his Father, Heavyweight Boxing

Ezzard Charles was a professional boxer and World Heavyweight Champion. He was born in Lawrenceville on July 7, 1921 and moved to Cincinnati when he was about seven years old. In 1950 he outpointed Joe Louis to become the World Heavyweight Champion. Ezzard Charles served in the army during WWII and he was also a respected double bass player who played with some of the jazz greats in the 40s and 50s. Ezzard Charles died on May 28, 1975 in Chicago from Lou Gehrig’s disease, he was 53 years old when he died.
Ezzard Charles II, the son of the world heavy weight champion, with his wife Inetta came to Lawrenceville May 28-30. Ezzard II lives in Chicago and is the father of five children, the grandfather of six. Ezzard Charles II came to Lawrenceville to attend the ceremony where his father was honored as one of the first inductees into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame; the ceremony was held on Sunday at Coolray Field during the Gwinnett Braves game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Ezzard Charles II and his wife, Inetta, were given a tour of Lawrenceville on Saturday May 29 and Mayor Rex Millsaps presented Charles with a proclamation declaring May 29 Ezzard Charles Day in Lawrenceville.
