Holidays mean sports, family and of course, friends

Twisting through a mass of Loundes High School football players is the green clad homegrown hero Ean Pemberton. Ean is only one standout in the group of nationally ranked athletes of Grayson High School football team coached by Grayson’s Mickey Conn. Thousands of people continue to brave some of the coldest, wettest late Fall weather Georgia offers to see how far these athletes will go in their quest for a state title.
The charm of Dacula High School is that no matter how large it gets (actually it will get smaller next year due to the opening of two new area high schools), it continues to function with the fun and involvement of a small town school. On Senior night in the fall, most area high schools have the parents of football players, cheerleaders and band come on the field with their Senior and this is a lovely moment.   Dacula added a touch and had each senior athlete also choose their faculty member or staff person who has “made a difference in their life” or simply made school more fun. I was awestruck at the pose of Athletic Director Secretary Ann Marie Tucker and Kyle Wright.  Why had he chosen her? From their threatening stance, I wondered if she had coached him in weight lifting. Actually Ms. Tucker confessed, she has known Kyle since he was in 2nd grade, a friend of her son Brandon. Now he is one of a dozen senior boys who uses her office as a locker—with the result that her office resembles a giant “lost and found” closet. Not only has she not trained him in fitness but she admits to giving the boys candy every day when they stop by to change out books.
Displaying grace and flexibility is the 2008-09 GHS Ramettes Dance Team. The dancers, who designed their own special group picture, are coached by Alecia Smith is comprised of Captain Rachel Lewis Junior,  UDA All-Star, who last year was awarded 2nd place soloist in Georgia, Jalisa Shelton - Senior, Marjorie Le - junior,  Jessica Butler - junior, Alicia Formella - sophomore, and Christa McDaniel- freshmen.
Around this time, I was also at the Elijah Winn house, photographing the Dacula Basketball and Basketball Cheer Seniors for the Cover image for their winter program. Heather Young, Yearbook Advisor and Foreign Language Faculty Chair, wife of Coach Travis Young, was there to ensure total cooperation from the athletes. The result was a pleasant photo of a really adorable group.
When Mill Creek High School Head Cheerleading Coach, Brenda Petty, called me to let me know Mill Creek Competition Cheer would need some extra images of their lst place State winning Competition Squad, she was anything but smug.  Coach Petty and fellow Coaches Ashley Baker, and Hayley Rounds  knew they had some talented girls, but they often competed at the same location as the notably talented Grayson, Chattahoochee, and South Forsyth so they didn’t have many first place finishes until sectionals and STATE!! Adding excitement is the fact that the team is young and will be losing only one senior.
When the Miss Central Gwinnett High School pageant added a division for 8th graders this year, Angel Smith was a natural – member of Cheerleading, Band and Step Team as well as class President of Richards Middle School. After she won, the evening was capped off with a photo of her and her distinguished escorts Ryan Riche and Corris Crocket. Both gentlemen are Beta Club members and Corris Crocket is the brother of  last year’s “Miss Sophomore”.
Tempa Kohler and her family, Michael, Ashley and Bradley, are some of our favorite people here at Magic Moment. While Ashley completes nursing school,  Bradley just graduated from Grayson High School and has two jobs – TJ Max and at a local golf course. Tempa Kohler, when not working at Magic Moment, volunteers alongside husband Michael at Grayson Special Populations, and also is the most talented baker we know. Any day that begins with “Tempa brought in cupcakes” is automatically a great day.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Tempa  remembers that photographers work extra hard at Christmas and need added sugar in their diet.
