LOOKING BACK
Mary Blair Arnold lived on Luckie Street in Lawrenceville when she was a little girl; her parents were Frank and Magnolia Blair. Frank Blair was a veteran of WWI, serving in the Army. Mary kept her dad’s discharge paper and his helmet and army cap. She has donated those artifacts to the Military Museum in the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. The Korean War ended on July 27, 1953.

The News-Herald, reported that James Robert King died in France on September 24, 1918.

In 1910 the Gwinnett Journal reported that the total population of Gwinnett County was 28,824 with 2,499 of that number being illiterate.
In 1921 gasoline was 22 cents a gallon.
The News-Herald reported in the August 18, 1923 edition, “The General Assembly passed a bill incorporating Snellville, the election for Snellville municipal officers will be in September 1923.”

HIGH REUNION

The Central Gwinnett High School classes of 1958/1959 gathered for a reunion on Saturday, June 20 at the 1818 Club Restaurant in the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce Building on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth, Georgia. Committee Chairman for the Class of 1958 was Blue Bagwell; Chairman for the Class of 1959 was Mary Frances Rhodes Franklin. Serving on the planning committee were Dennis Rooks, Calvin Nabors, Fred Lee and Louise Atkinson Phillips. Event Coordinator was Patsy Ethridge Rooks.

THE BELL TOLLS

Grayson High Bell Tower
The sound of the Grayson High School Bell is an important part of campus life at GHS; the bell sounds for important events occurring there and the bell ringers hold an important job. The bell was once part of the old Grayson High School and it was moved to the bell tower at GHS after the new school opened. Bell ringers are Romina Salkie, Junior and Senior Class President Bianca Millien. The bell often tolls during the school year.

CONGRATULATIONS

The wedding of Elizabeth Ann Watts and Christopher Michael Rhoton was on Saturday June 27 at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Baptist Church in Cartersville, Georgia.

Karen Platt
Karen Platt, daughter of Ed and Teresa Platt and granddaughter of Gerald and Margaret Thompson of Lawrenceville was awarded her Juris Doctorate Degree in International Law from Florida State University College of Law on May 9, 2009. While a law student Karen studied abroad at Oxford University in England and also completed an internship at the International Bar Association in London. While in Tallahassee Karen did pro bono work with Guardian Ad Litem and Ochlockonee River Soil and Water Conservation District. She received recognition for outstanding pro bono service at her graduation. Prior to going to law school, Karen attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee; she graduated in 2006 with a double major in International Studies and Russian Studies. While a student at Rhodes she traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia to study at the Gornyi Institute. Karen is a 2002 graduate of Berkmar High School.

Clayton M. Mersmann was awarded the Reid Mullins Scholarship for 2009, sponsored by the Snellville Middle School PTA. He is a graduate of South Gwinnett High School and will be attending the University of Georgia this fall.

CURRENT EVENTS

The ribbon cutting for the beautiful Alexander Park was held on June 13, 2009. The park property was previously part of the farm belonging to Jane Alexander and her husband, Alec. Jane and her family were present at the special ceremony and her grandson, Chad, spoke about the memories that his family has of working the family land that has been preserved as green space in this county.

Walking With Grace by Robin Dill is a book that can be used as a tool for churches to start congregational respite programs for adults with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairment issues. Grace Arbor at the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church is open 4 days per week from 10 until 3. Days that Grace Arbor is open are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Grace Arbor opened in August 2005 and now has about 20 participants. Robin Dill directs the program at Lawrenceville First Methodist; her book sells for $24.95.

Gwinnett Retired Educators, Lois Allen and Nita Hallford. Nita is the 2009/10 President of Gwinnett County Retired Educators Association. The association meets on the third Fridays at the Hamilton Mill Restaurant.
The Farmer’s Market in Lawrenceville is now open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturdays until September. The market is on Crogan Street, between South Clayton and South Perry. For more information call 678-226-2639. The market always has great tomatoes and other home grown vegetables.

Juanita Davis Adams died on May 15, 2008. Juanita is survived by her husband Pete Adams, two sisters and two daughters Juanita was a Gwinnett native and a graduate of Lawrenceville High School, Class of 1949. She lived in Austell and worked for Bell South for 37 years. The memorial service was at the Mt. Calvary Church in Austell.

Trackside is the newest event facility opened in Lawrenceville; Linda Nash and Roger Kahn had the building renovated and updated. The first event at Trackside was held on May 23. Plans for the building were found in a newspaper dated 1903 and the building dates back to about 1904; it was first used for cotton storage when Gwinnett was an agricultural county; cotton could be loaded onto trains after being stored there. Later there was a store in the building and now it is a beautiful facility for large or small gatherings.
