Lawrenceville, GA – Ten Gwinnett County High School students have been selected to receive the Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship from the Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, the first African American Greek-letter sorority in Gwinnett County.
The 2008 Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship recipients are Mehiret Wondimu, Central Gwinnett High School; Shanise Lawrence, Berkmar High School; Kiana Nicholas, Central Gwinnett High School; Kaitlyn Gaddis, South Gwinnett High School; Monique Jones, South Gwinnett High School; Vonee Hemans, Brookwood High School; Mi’lisa Patton, Peachtree Ridge High School; Mia Crayton, Brookwood High School; Mallory Fox, Parkview High School; and Kameon Prather, North Gwinnett High School.

The Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship was established to honor the first African American female superintendent in the state of Georgia, namely Mrs. Beauty P. Baldwin of Gwinnett County.  Baldwin is also a charter member of Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter.  Typically the scholarship is reserved for female African American students; however in their efforts to embrace African American males, this is the second year the chapter will award a scholarship to a male student.

“Education is one of the keys to success,” said Geri B. Gonzalez, President, Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter.  “Awarding scholarships to deserving and talented students is not only an investment in our youth, but also an investment in Gwinnett County and the state of Georgia.”

Gonzalez continued, “And the return on that investment, a college education for our best and brightest students, is priceless.”

Scholarship recipients have already been accepted to an accredited 4-year college or university.  In addition to high scholastic achievement, the recipients possess leadership potential, good character and have participated in community service activities.

Chapter members will honor the recipients and award scholarships on Saturday, June14 at a very special Scholarship Reception at Hopewell Christian Academy in Norcross, Georgia at 4:00 pm.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first African American Greek letter Organization for college- educated women and was founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908.   The sorority marked 100 years of service in January 2008.  Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter is over 100 members strong and was chartered in Gwinnett County in 1994.
