LOOKING BACK
IN GWINNETT
The News-Herald printed the following in September 1910: “The large brick building being erected by A.A. Mauldin is almost completed and brings forth words of praise from all who see it. The room next the railroad will be occupied by S.S. Mauldin with a stock of general merchandise. Sam and Walter Brown will use the upper side, and the main body of the first and second floors will be used for storage purposes. A nice line of office rooms on the second floor will be occupied by C.U. Born, C.C. Williams and others. There is a fine spring of water in the basement of the building and a force pump carries the sparkling fluid to every part of the house.”

The March 3, 1919 issue of The News-Herald reported that a brass band was organized at Buford with Loss Shadburn, M.C. Shadburn, Lee Strickland and Everett Greer as officers of the band association.
The Grayson High School Class of 1925: Lucille Starnes Baker, Runell Brooks Foster, Mae Camp Graham, Hazel Cooper Edge, T.A. In 1957 Grayson High School was consolidated with Snellville High School to form South Gwinnett High School. The second Grayson High School opened in the fall of 2000 and it is located on Hope Hollow Road in Loganville.
The Duluth Baptist Church was organized February 13, 1886.
SERVICES FOR
CONFEDERATE
SOLDIERS
Two impressive services in honor of brothers Hiram Worthy and Thomas Franklin Worthy were held on March 13, 2010. Both men served in the Confederate Army during the War Between the States; they were in Company B, 42nd Georgia Voluntary Infantry Regiment. There were six brothers and five of them served in the army; two brothers were buried in Virginia, two in Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery in Gwinnett County and two in Snellville, Georgia.
A recognition service was held for Hiram Worthy at 10 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery on Highway 124 in Snellville, Georgia. Hiram Worthy was wounded in Cobb County in 1864. After the Mount Zion service, Thomas Worthy was honored at the Snellville City Cemetery in Snellville, Georgia. Thomas Franklin Worthy served with General Joseph Eggleston Johnston and surrendered with Johnston’s troops in North Carolina.
Sons of Confederate Veterans placed a marble marker at each grave.

IN GWINNETT
The funeral for Gwinnett County Native Christine Craig Blaney was on March 7, 2010. Christine Blaney was married for 58 years to Gerald Blaney, Sr. and they were parents of three children and they had five grandchildren. Christine Blaney’s parents were Fred and Irene Langley Craig. Christine founded the preschool program at the Lawrenceville First Methodist Church and taught kindergarten on the hill in Lawrenceville; she also worked as Gwinnett County School Food Service Director before her retirement.

Kidstuff is a program founded by Dr. Lamar Holley and the program serves children around the world. Kidstuff recently partnered with Archer Touchdown Club to provide funding for the construction of a utility building at the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter. On March 6, 2010 the Archer football team and their dads along with other volunteers constructed the building. The project was pulled together by Daryl Bryant and Don Segars and the building will provide outdoor storage for the recreational area at the Shelter.

The Lawrenceville Tourism and Trade Association now has Ashley Murphy as a manager for the Visitor Information Center. She will be responsible for the daily activities of the Visitor Information Center and overseeing the volunteers at the center. Ashley Murphy is a graduate of Georgia College and State University.

A fashion show and silent auction presented by the Robbie Susan Moore Foundation for Education, Inc. will be held on Sunday April 11, 2010 at Inviting Events, 3485 Stone Mountain Highway 78 in Snellville, Georgia. For tickets and information call Rubye Neal at 770-277-5123. This is the first fund raiser in honor and memory of Robbie Susan Moore for whom a new middle school has been named.

Congratulations to Nell Green Parks who celebrated a BIG birthday on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Nell celebrated the event with family and friends at a birthday luncheon at the home of Margaret Williams in Lawrenceville.

Good News! The Gwinnett library branches will be open seven days a week beginning April 25. Sundays the library will be open from 1 until 5; Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 until 8; Wednesdays from 1 until 8; Thursdays 10 until 8; Fridays 10 until 3 and Saturdays from 10 until 5.

Free tours of Lawrenceville will begin Easter Sunday. Tours will be hourly from 1 p.m. until the last one begins at 4; gathering place for the tours is Crogan Street across from the entrance to the Historic Courthouse.

Members of First Families of Gwinnett will gather with their guests at 7 p.m. on April 10 for a dessert buffet and talk on the early history of the area.
GRAYSON HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
The Grayson High School 13th annual Reunion was held on March 27, 2010 at Grayson High School on Hope Hollow Road in Loganville.
The class of 1960 celebrated their 50th year since graduation.
There will be more about the reunion in the next issue.
CHURCH TO HOLD FINANCIAL SEMINAR
An entertaining and educational seminar in which participants will receive 400 tips on how to stretch hard earned money will be held at Center Hill Baptist Church in Loganville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday April 13, 2010. Guest speaker Douglas Couch of the Georgia Baptist Foundation will be the featured speaker. There is no charge for the seminar.
