Emory Eastside - New Orthopedic Unit meets a growing need

By Beth Volpert-Serrero

Emory Eastside Medical Center's New Education Facility for the new Surgical Orthopedic Wing.
SNELLVILLE – The fact that Emory Eastside Hospital is growing is really not news to most people who live near the facility. It has been expanding and providing the surrounding area with top notch medical staff, state of the art technology and patient care from the tiniest and most fragile to the eldest among us for more than thirty years. The hospital's commitment to quality care continues into the next several years with both an extensive expansion plan as well as some innovative short term solutions.
Based on a need for more specialized care in the area of orthopedics, Emory Eastside has begun the process to create an impressive surgical unit capable of housing a patient in an upscale and comfortable environment from the early days of determining the need for surgery, through the surgery and immediately into physical therapy. Beyond that, Emory Eastside's state of the art inpatient rehabilitation unit at the Heritage Center is available for those patients requiring an extended recovery period.
Each room in the proposed new ten bed expansion will provide a patient with a comfortable bed, large screen flat panel television, high speed internet, private dining and family waiting and most importantly, highly skilled, knowledgeable focused nursing care. "When patients determine with their doctor that a joint replacement surgery is in their future, many have the luxury of a certain amount of time to prepare and educate themselves," says Dustin Greene, COO. "Joint replacement patients will benefit from educational offerings on the unit well in advance of their operation," adds Greene. "They will learn about the operation and rehabilitation process, meet the nurses and physical therapists who will be caring for them and tour our leading edge medical facility." Greene emphasizes that education is key in making surgery less traumatic and that the new inclusive facility will get them on the road to recovery sooner. With a dedicated gym and physical therapists combined with specialized nursing staff, the new unit will provide patients with the latest and best orthopedic surgery care in the area. The unit will also serve spinal surgery patients. The same thoughts for those who have joint surgery apply to those patients as well. Minimizing stress from surgery and recovery will serve all patients well in the full service and comfortable orthopedic unit.
Look for the unit to break ground in late June and be ready for patients in mid-August. "We have long range plans for our growing area that will continue to serve our population, but right now, this is an innovative solution for an immediate need," reflects Greene.
