• The Gwinnett Journal, Saturday March 23, 1913, “The Hopkins Theater when completed will be a credit to Lawrenceville.” The first show at the theater which was still being completed was on March 21, 1913.
• March 1932, Alford’s store opened in the place formerly occupied by McGee on Crogan Street.
• March 23, 1937, the Gwinnett Journal reported, “Mrs. Sams, Dr. D.C. Kelley and J.C. Oakes make up the new Board of Health.”
• From the News-Herald, March 26, 1941, “Alice Neal celebrated her 82nd birthday. She has 10 children, 47 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.”
• The News-Herald, March 5, 1944, “Three arsonists set fire to the Lawrenceville High School building.”
• The News-Herald, March 6, 1946, “The Henry-Dickey-Wages American Legion Post #178 was chartered at Mercer University honoring Ensign Emory S. Wages, Lt. Ray Dickey and Major L. Henry, all casualties of WWII.”
• The News-Herald March 10, 1946, “John Maurice Frazier of Lawrenceville was presented the first Eagle Scout Badge awarded to a scout in Gwinnett County.”

CURRENT NEWS

Judith Fundis, President of Gwinnett County Retired Educators Association with Clarissa Rice, Memorial Chairman at the association meeting in February. All educators are invited to attend the nest luncheon which will be held on March 18 at 11 A.M. at the Hamilton Mill Restaurant, Hamilton Mill Parkway.
• Reverend Larry Wynn has served Hebron Baptist Church for 33 years; he came to Hebron in 1978. Reverend Wynn has taken a position with the North American Mission Board; his last day as Senior Pastor of Hebron Church was February 27. Larry Wynn, a native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, will continue to live in Dacula where he and his wife have three children and two grandchildren.
• On March 12 a motorcycle ride honoring Georgia State Patrol’s Corporal Chadwick LeCroy will begin in Atlanta and end at the Wild Wing Café at 3265 Lawrenceville/Suwanee Road in Suwanee. Corporal LeCroy was fatally shot on December 27, 2010 when he made a routine traffic stop in Atlanta.
• Candidates for Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman are Will Costa, Larry Gause, Duane Kissel, and Charlotte Nash.
• The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has raised the charge for Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services medical transports by $225 per trip.
• The Duncan Creek Park in the Hamilton Mill area has a new fence and those who use the park are happy over this safety feature. In the past people had attempted to cross over the busy Hwy 124 and the fence is good news.
• The Grayson City Council set a qualifying fee of $10 for candidates in the recent city election; the city also adopted a graffiti ordinance which would require property owners to remove graffiti or allow the city to hire someone to remove it.
• The new Snellville Police Department building is now occupied; the ribbon cutting was January 27, 2010 and the Police Department is now in the middle of the town. The Snellville Police Chief is Roy Whitehead.
• The new public works building in Snellville will be ready by April 1.
• Two police officers have been added to the Snellville Police Force.
• The J.C. Penney Home Store on Pleasant Hill is slated to be closed by June 1, 2011.
• Duluth native, Rodney Harris, was sworn into the office of Gwinnett County Recorder’s Court Judge on January 6, 2011. Rodney is a graduate of the Georgia State University Law School.
• Four Gwinnett County Schools received Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grants. Corley Elementary received a $5,800 grant; Hopkins Elementary received $2,000; Meadowcreek High received $5,000; Nesbit Elementary received $5,000.
• Susan Opferman, Creekland Middle School Assistant Principal, was presented the 2011 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year award from the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

The Robbie Moore Foundation For Education, Inc. Committee met on February 13 at the home of Bob and Lanai Pope. Members of the committee, in addition to the hosts, are Grace Smith, Reverend J.L. Allen, Carmen Allen, Kwane Moore, Carol Jones, Denise Braswell, Barry and Sandra Wilburn and Rubye Neal. Absent from the meeting were Joyce Moore, Judge Rodney Harris, Dr. Theresa Wilburn, and Reggie Smith. This committee is dedicated to work for the Robbie Moore Middle School and plans for the second annual fund raiser were discussed at the February meeting.
The second annual fund raiser for the Robbie Moore Foundation will be held on April 3, 2011. The fund raiser will be held at 3 p.m. at the Inviting Events Ballroom, 3485 Stone Mountain Highway 78 in Snellville, Georgia. Advance tickets are $35; tickets at the door will be $50. There will be a silent auction and lots of food at the event. Proceeds from the fund raiser are used to finance scholarships for local students.
The Robbie Moore Middle School, located on Highway 29 in Lawrenceville, will open in the fall of 2011. Anyone interested in helping to support the school and to assist in providing opportunities for local students is cordially invited to attend the annual fund raiser on April 3, 2011.

MILESTONE CELEBRATION
Duane and Montess Huff, with family and friends celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at a party held on February 12, 2011. Duane and Montess are retired Gwinnett County educators and members of the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church. Duane volunteers in the Young Eagles Program at Briscoe Field; he had taken over 500 youngsters up in his plane.

Nell Foster Brooks’ Birthday
It has become and annual event for the Grayson Alumni to celebrate Nell Foster Brooks’ birthday at the reunion; she was Runell Brooks when she graduated from Grayson High School with the class of 1925. Nell married Clyde Foster.
This year Nell Foster Brooks will have a special 105th Birthday party at the Grayson Alumni Luncheon as she gathers with her special, long time Grayson friends.
